Call me Debbie Downer, but I sized up Mara to be someone with bipolar disorder who was in a manic phase. I assumed her tales of her travels around the world were part of her delusions. The fact that Horace appeared to be buying into Mara's story was evidence that he was in such a dark place of pain.
