Surprised to see Carter's death announced here given the usual pop culture focus, particularly on the music side of things (Crystal Castles ≠ avant garde).

Bah, there was always plenty of crap music out there, and there's plenty of good popular music now. Looking back at charts from the '60s you'll see tons of generic Byrds/Beatles/Dylan knockoffs whose only real value is nostalgia. I don't agree that some crap third-rate Byrds knockoff song from a long-forgotten one-hit

Being snide and dismissive of this report is completely and totally valid. Though I haven't read the report, if these scientists are in fact deciding that they've scientifically "found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," as it quotes them saying in that Reuters article, they're idiots.

One thing no one seems to have really mentioned, and that I was kind of expecting would be addressed in the article given the title, is that a problem with buying digital downloads is that you DON'T own the music. When you pay for something on iTunes you are buying a license to listen to it for your own personal use.

Thanks, AV Club!
Just wanted to say thanks to the AV Club for turning me onto Albert Brooks' movies through various articles about him over the years. Brooks' films are criminally overlooked, and his early oeuvre is so consistent and amazing, and holds up so incredibly well, it's hard to believe. He's like an

American Psycho II
With Mila Kunis and William Shatner.
Kunis is a girl who saw her mother get killed by Patrick Bateman, and this turned her into a serial killer or something. The movie is a straight-up, really bad slasher flick with no other connection to the first one.
And I can't think of a movie more stand-alone

I don't get it
I just really don't get why everyone loves Ride so much. I find them so, so bland. For many years I assumed that MBV was the only worthwhile shoegazing band, because everyone said Ride were great and I was so very underwhelmed when I checked them out, I assumed it didn't get any better than them except

Old vs. new hollywood
The original True Grit did have some new hollywoodish elements though, what with Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall being all up in it. It was one of those movies where there's that interesting contrast between the old hollywood, classical, mannered acting style and the newer, rawer, more

Neubauten influenced Wire?
I've never heard that before.. That's an odd thing to say, considering Wire started in 1976 and were on hiatus from 1980 - 1985, which is when Neubauten were just starting out. I don't think Wire's poppier later '80s stuff really would owe a whole lot to them either..
Unless you're referring

Missed one
The Associates' "Stephen, You're Really Something", a response to the Smiths' "William, It Was Really Nothing", which was written about Associates lead singer Billy Mackenzie.
