I think the letter didn't just convince Jon to go to war at Winterfell, but also the Wildlings to fight with him. Without the letter or threats to the Wildlings, they would maybe think it's not their problem? Kinda gets everybody at the table on board in a quick minute.

How they managed to meet up with the people they were trying to find in the compound after releasing a horde of zombies and therby scattering everyone was stupid luck. That was not a plan.
