Yeah, I think the title card said something like "A little bit later down the line" or something vague like that when they first showed the wedding.

It does lead to some great storytelling techniques.  Like when Ted can't remember the name of a girl he dated, so he refers to her as "Blah Blah" the entire episode.

Since the kids have been wearing the same clothes for the 7 years it's taken to tell this story, they probably haven't had to deal with that yet.  Maybe that can be the final scene of the series finale?
