I saw this in theaters as well. I was hammer drunk as all hell, so it was pretty fun.

I was pretty sure that I heard the king of all douchebags (Cliffy B) say that the game did indeed draw inspiration from Whedon's Serenity/Firefly.

I think it has something to do with mining resources. But I don't know for sure.

Inspirations
I get the impression that this game was pretty heavily inspired by Firefly/Serenity. Video games need a little more Joss Whedon and a little less Michael Bay.
