This is how I've always taken it.  He wanted to explain it, but then Tracey marches onto his bridge and starts acting like an asshole.  Then the situation escalates too quickly for a reasonable conversation about the real plan to happen, because Mal can't believe that this little shithead is being so ungrateful.

I honestly love the treacle, myself.  I can just roll around in it all day, and it's why I love this show more than even AD, what really separates it in this day and age, especially.  And I wish so badly we had the Abed/Pierce tag, forever and ever.
