In the new series yes. In the classic series, no. A number of companions chose to leave the Doctor of their own will rather than be torn away from him…….

The writers of "TBBT" are faced with the dilemma of trying to maintain a sense of truth to the show's roots (nerdy guys with a love for comics/sci-fi and with limited social skills) with the fact that they are now awkwardly trying to grow the hell up and behave like men by pairing them off into relationships.

I honestly don't know how long "Glee" is going to be able to sustain the two seperate story strands of what's happening inside McKinley High and outside the boundaries of the school (with it's former graduates) because right now it feels like it's both too much and yet not enough at the same time.

It is. "Red Haven" was Rob Lowe's final appearance as a series regular on "The West Wing" and keeping in fashion with all the other departures we've seen, it's done with no fanfare or explaination. Sam is now part of the show's history……

Since Rob Lowe was seen (at least at the beginning of "The West Wing") as being the series lead, he got top billing and was paid more than his fellow cast members (apart from Martin Sheen).

Aaron Sorkin was renown for leaving the fate of characters up in the air and not providing any real resolution regarding what ultimately happened to them. From Mandy Hampton, to Ainsley Hayes (who's fate we find out about YEARS later!), Lionel Tribbey and Joe Quincy.

It's a sexualized element that the new series has thrown in to compensate for the fact that in the classic series, the Doctor and his relationships to his companions was kept strictly platonic as the Doctor was seen as being an asexual creature. As one producer said, "No hanky panky in the TARDIS".

I loved Donna's grandad (Wilf) but her mother always struck me as being hyper critical. Granted she loved her daughter but she also acted as though Donna was a disappointment to her, never quite living up to her expectations.

The difference between Rory and Amy's family is that Steven Moffat has wisely kept them in the background whereas Russell T Davies felt the need to include the companions families frequently which really served very little in terms of actual plot development. "Doctor Who" has always firmly occupied the middle ground between "Torchwood" & "The Sarah Jane Adventures". Whereas "TW" was aimed at an adult audience and the "SJA's" was directed at the kids, "DW" is a family show that the grown ups and kids can both enjoy in equal measure and therein lies it's appeal.
