finally got around to watching 'Jodorowsky's Dune' recently; the question posited in the first few minutes (I'm paraphrasing): 'what if Jodorowsky's Dune had beaten Star Wars to the punch as *the* sci-fi space opera of it's time?' is a fascinating poser to ponder ..

not sure.
I did come home from work this afternoon to find a cheap poster advertising the film plastered to my lounge wall, though, and I nearly packed my bags.
I'd like to think I can resist.

careful.

can't you just go see the Dressmaker instead?

she wanted to see the Dressmaker!

*Boffins

yup; really well said.
the photography throughout the Tattooine stuff has a surprising level of doco-like verisimilitude considering the fantastical elements.
I can still get a kick out of Jawas popping up behind crepuscular desert rocks as they pursue a nervous R2, purely due to the juxtaposition of the natural scenery

Empire is the only one with a hint of sophistication in that it contains an actual metaphor (actually, Sith kinda does too, to be fair - although Sith's is more of a parable) ..

I'm early 40's; like you, Star Wars was my life for a long, long time.
But I grew up!
I still enjoy the first two films just fine; cannot tolerate any aspect of ROTJ though, and the prequels were largely disappointing.
I'd rather I was enthralled by new sci-fi rather than endlessly re-hashing a 'franchise' which was

Not if the other 4 movies were shite (which they were).

Made an original film with some real vision and creativity instead of re-hashing a decades-old trilogy which peaked in 1980?
Just sayin': he coulda done that.

agree; that's essentially what Dowd is saying; he just softened it a bit so's not to attract an avalanche of butthurt fanfolk ire.
understandable.

You've made this same comment approx. 18,000 times in this thread; fact is that not everyone is gonna blow their nut over what essentially amounts to a glossy remake of something that came out nearly 40 years ago.

My belief in the former precludes giving a fuck about the latter ..

I'm old enough to have seen 'A New Hope' in a cinema (and did), but still think that the Avatar stuff (Airbender/Korra - not the James Cameron thing) pisses all over Star Wars for character development, imagination and brilliantly staged action.
It's kinda sad that 40 years after the original Star Wars,

Mike's revolution completed.

Agreed, and to me, Mike's fate resonated in light of the Wheelbarrow Thief story he told Lou earlier in the season -

Guessing it's something to do with Luke - thanks for the spoiler, Patton. Asshole.

'eventually'??

'Buena' is probably an obvious choice, but that'd go close to being my favourite Morphine song (from Cure of Pain, of course) ..
