Book reader here. Nothing in the show has really passed up the books yet. The new stuff in the show is mostly just mergings of plotlines that already exist. This battle, for instance, happened in the books, but Jon just wasn't there (it was only mentioned in a creepy, cryptic message sent from a raven).

I was actually on acid when I watched the last 3 episodes of that show. A++ highly recommended.
