I agree and I think he sells moments like that just fine. As others have noted, he's often at the mercy of truly stilted dialogue and I really do not believe any actor on this earth could sell.

I thought this episode was the shit too. I would've given it a solid B+ personally. I don't really disagree with anything in the review, but I don't think any of it distracted from the manic humor of it.
