Yeah there is a lot of gaps to fill within Chuck's story and will hopefully be fleshed out in the episodes to follow. But taking into account how little we know about how things were for them back then and also taking his story at face value (unreasonable I know). I think the backstory with Jimmy stealing the 14,000 and his dad subsequently dying negates him from being a full antagonist, which happened to clear up Chuck's motivations quite a bit.
