Wow.  I am late to this party but disagree with everything the writer said here, for the record.  Episode 1 seemed to fly by for me, and I found it to be both entertaining and sensical.  I disagree that Matthew and Mary seem to be different characters - Matthew is still proud and Mary still puts her family/money/class…

Just watched the audio commentary for the episode, and Vince Gilligan said that the video game creators made that sequence just for Breaking Bad, and they're huge fans of the show.
