Little known TNG fact: Data came with a free Frogurt!

@avclub-04d524031f29c89d78cae864bd6f0de7:disqus Hooray! Someone else who doesn't like "The Magnificent Ferengi"!

And, for a less futuristic example, the Unsullied in Game of Thrones.

I think the combined powers of Jack Gleeson and Lena Headey could indeed create this situation, at least temporarily. I will say Joffrey's death in the book actually freaked me out, but that's largely because the kind of poison they used sounds so nightmarish and not out of any particular sympathy for Joffrey per se.

@avclub-d0afe12655aee19d7225146067e91d19:disqus Knecht is actually cognate with it (and the pronunciation is essentially the same — the vowel is a little different). It also means "servant" in modern German; Dutch and German and Old English are all part of the same basic language family. (IIRC cniht had those

I just want to say the connection to the Leviathan frontispiece is pretty brilliant.

There's an actual answer to that though! In Middle English it wasn't silent (nor was the k, for that matter, so the "silly English kanigets" line in Monty Python is pretty close to the original pronunciation, though not quite identical). The Old English form is cniht which just meant "boy."

Also, I think Tyrion actually said "killing puppies," which is an unfortunate choice of small adorable animals, considering the news…

It's a review of a Lisa episode that doesn't contain the phrase "joyless scold"! I don't know what to think!

"Fuck you, Chief! You've met Alexander!"

During Future Odo's big confession of love I always picture present-day Bucket Odo sitting there thinking "NOOOOOOO SHUT UP CREEPY FUTURE ME SHUT UP RIGHT NOW." But of course he can't say it, because goo.

I seem to recall that being an actual plotline (albeit without the time-travel element) in an early episode — like, in one of the first two seasons. And at the end Janeway said that anyone who wanted to could stay on the planet but everybody chose to stay on the ship. Or something. I haven't actually watched Voyager

Well, even by mid-TNG Troi found replicated chocolate sundaes inferior to the non-replicated variety.

THE A.V. CLUB
just a genetic trainwreck

Martok even has the appropriate facial injury!

@avclub-0c3e626d1a287cdc48c77515c8dcc243:disqus And little Kirayoshi is full of existential angst!

He has such a strong grasp of his character!

I'm totally rooting for Varys POV in book 6, now that we know a little more about his agenda…

Blackfish just really likes peeing on trees.

This episode was a pretty strong demonstration in the emotional function of closing credits music. Without it there's nothing to break the "rocking back and forth clutching your blankie in horror" tension. If you have a blankie. I figured one would be necessary for this episode, and it certainly proved me correct.
