I didn't find Requiem for a Dream to be especially sad. I mean, it's not a happy movie. But the way it's filmed is so over-the-top that it pulls me out of the movie's emotions.

If you were in any of the many areas where all the storefronts were dark and empty, it really had an almost post-apocalyptic feel.
I was at a mall where only one of the four spaces for "anchor" department stores was filled, and only four or five other stores were open.
