@avclub-2a6ac9e5324952e36b40237cf2fcdad8:disqus I don't know. I think a lot of his readers like a lot of his broad-spectrum beliefs in sexuality, and common-sense figure-out-what-works approach to relationships, but still like monogamy and commitment. There aren't many columnists anyone open to the sex stuff and free…
I agree with a lot of this and a lot of the responses to this, and I think there's a definite sense of shaming of people who aren't having casual sex. There's little room for preference - you're either repressed, repressive, emotionally confused, or such a social undesirable that anyone would have a much better time…
@avclub-dd1f2ad3a1bf536bc3d7ea8628152941:disqus Good distinction. (You mean Amy, right?) It's the aim for describing the universal that really elevates Enlightened and the best of art and the lack of it stops a lot of very good work from really becoming great.
And yes, possibly the best female protagonist I've seen (I…
One thing that I hope doesn't come from the Emmy discussion - or the cancellation - is the idea that Enlightened was some kind of failure. I respect the hell out of Mike White for his conscious choice not to throw in any of those traditional selling points - sex, violence, pop culture, even traditional-charisma stars.…
@avclub-12a6b31534819f646bd9bf5e8a99756d:disqus I'm 26 and live in Brooklyn. I don't think it's just generational. I think it's that Girls is very image-conscious and Enlightened is conscious of much deeper but less catchy things.
For some reason that particular comparison is especially aggravating to me. Both shows deal somewhat with self-examination, but the concept of self is vastly more mature in Enlightened, and the storytelling is much more subtle and honest. Putting them back-to-back made Girls look downright goofy. But it has indie rock…
Sure , probably, but the Emmys are so far from recognizing good shows and Enlightened is so far from getting the recognition it deserves that it just doesn't seem like a useful discussion to be having.
@avclub-c701a997d9bef627835b036efb4eca63:disqus I agree with you. It's fine to wonder where and who you are, to an extent, but you have to acknowledge that from that point you need to proceed to do what you want to do. Not what you would see yourself doing because of how you think of yourself.
And if what you want to…
How much did you care?
I've said it before, but I think it's a disturbing aspects of our culture that some people feel like they have to go through a certain story-type progression in their life. It's dumb and it's dismal.
I've seen this in a few women, and it's a disturbing kind of distancing. I guess for some of them there's a comfort in not blaming themselves for their actions, because society is pretty fucking harsh on women's sexual choices. But that's not a healthy reaction, and it's not really good for anyone (the people…
At the point where you realize you're "going through a phase," you're aware enough of your behavior to really consider what you're doing.
I've had some great times on drugs but getting high to get over a breakup sounds like a terrible idea. Watching porn to get over a breakup also just seems useless.
@avclub-b327ac90601ec5904ca8e539cba62638:disqus Isn't "slut" too many different words at this point to be worth splitting? Are any of them much use?
I've seen a lot of American Dad, and it is always pretty fucking grating - when it's hitting, it's funny enough to soften it, but it never will not be annoying.
I've seen plenty of American Dad episodes, from my days of watching TV just to have something to look at while I was eating, and I never thought it was great. It sells out its characters and plots way too quickly. The subtlety and humanity of Bob's Burgers makes it a lot more watchable and also heightens the absurdity.
I didn't see Man of Steel, but I wouldn't expect that, because he's not really an author. He's a guy who adapts comic books (or franchises)for TV and tries to convey the spirit of what he's adapting.
Dr. Manhattan is the only Superman-style character I found interesting, and it's an example of how you can have interesting problems even with unlimited power. But it's not in Superman's personality to be Dr. Manhattan, and obviously you can't play the Watchmen approach for a standard superhero movie - they do have to…
Yes, as an individual acting achievement, nobody touches Gandolfini as Tony Soprano. I've gone back and forth between Sopranos, The Wire, and Deadwood, but Tony Soprano is the greatest character in TV drama without much argument.
