The biggest strength of C.K.'s narrative style is that he doesn't have to contrive the situations or story points - he finds where he wants to start telling the story and gets right to it. He's writing short stories instead of a serial. What's nice is that he's a good enough filmmaker that the set-ups are always

I hope he means the best show about it.

He's excellent as a stand-up, and part of the point of those scenes is to watch him as a person when he's onstage. The way it's shot, and the way Louie (character) is so vulnerable, you get a lot more out of it than you do from the scenes in Seinfeld.

Shandling definitely has the combination of humility and humor down, and The Larry Sanders Show is possibly the greatest TV show of all time. But he didn't play with narrative the same way, which is one interesting thing that people can take from CK's show and apply it to their own sensibility.

"(HBO already has a somewhat successful comedy highly influenced by Louie in Girls.)"
I've seen this comparison a lot. Girls is similar from a production standpoint and for its honesty and aesthetic, but I don't see it in its legacy as a comedy at all. It doesn't have Louie's absurdist/surrealist sense of humor, and it

Mainly because Girls was a critically interesting show whereas New Girl was not. You can debate quality and merit but what that comes down to is Girls has more unusual elements and fewer close precedents.

It's good to know that if it ever came time for me to eat a bowl of shit, I'd have a community of discerning individuals to tell me what variety is least terrible.

Yeah, I think it was clear that the environment was fucking with him. You could lights out with any crowd or with any normal interaction where you're not beholden to a person, but someone putting you on the spot with such a specific (to them) but unclear (to you) expectation can still be a motherfucker.
