Jake was perfect for this show, in my opinion.  He was a thoroughly average kid, mercifully.  Most kids in TV Land are either wunderkinds or overly annoying brats.  DS9 did well by the Jake character.

I felt that they should have just promoted one of the recurring to regular status (Garak or Damar, preferably), but I think this would have worked, as well.  Maybe Ezri wouldn't have bothered me so much if she didn't clog up the final season with getting her feet wet.
