That is a good point. I guess looks easy to pronounce is a better description. But even the actual pronunciation is easier than many South Indian names.

I think part of it is that the word itself is pretty easy for a native English speaker. Combine that the motel thing and it's penetration into areas without large Desi populations and you end up with cultural shorthand.

I think choosing a good venue has a lot to do with it.  I saw him at the House of Blues in dallas about 5 years ago. It was a solid show. I think venues with good acoustics don't force him to strain as much.  I can't imagine trying to see him in an outdoor environment.  I don't think he would be able to carry it off.
