@avclub-0f0d67e214f9fef69b278e3d08114da9:disqus I've been trying to work a few Coach Taylor-isms into my speech recently. Especially telling everyone I meet to say hello to their grandmother/wife for me. And showing up at random homes late at night and giving them advice on a football field or in a car.

Same for me on all counts.

I think Matt has always been the heart of the show. He was the backup QB to Jason Street, and eventually forced to shoulder the QB 1 role after Jason is paralyzed. His dad is in Iraq and would rather be there. His mom fled. His grandma has dementia. He's poor. He works. He has to get good grades. He loves something…

Yea. I think the problem with season 2 is that you could tell that NBC would just not leave them alone. They clearly shoehorned in a crime drama (wouldn't be NBC without one) and upped the sex quotient to make a play for more viewers. The quick resolution of those plot lines shows how uncomfortable the writers were…

I can't help but imagine that a message movie about fracking does more harm than good. Same goes for that Demand A Plan thing going on about gun control. I agree in principle with most of this stuff, but I really doubt that anyone of consequence will be swayed by Matt Damon telling us that fracking is bad, or Piers…

Matt Saracen is such an amazing character. The actor absolutely nails it, and the writers did such a good job.

Friday Night Lights. I can't remember the last show that made me feel for the characters more than this. Everything about this show (aside from some season 2 dodginess) is so so real. Just one of the best shows I have ever seen.

I'd like this comment but I'm afraid I would provide you with too much positive affirmation.

You're equating the commenters here with the general public. We would accuse the drama above as hamfisted, just as we also take regular dumps on Two and a Half Men.

It can be both. I personally believe we're living in the alternate, satirical version of a considerably better Earth.
