I think that first paragraph is right on. I interpreted that Wal-Mart line as sincerely hopeful, but also aware of how absurd it is that a community in the capital of the richest country in the world is so poor that it has to pray for a Wal-Mart.
I think "musicians who collaborate with the Flaming Lips" would at least roughly correlate with "musicians who really, really like mescaline."
