I'm sorry, I don't see the irony you mention. The people threatening to riot if he lost were his supporters. He didn't lose, so of course they aren't out rioting. There was less mention of rioting if he won, because people on the left didn't think that was likely to happen.

I think what they accomplished was getting a picture out that the news couldn't ignore. That's not a reason to keep holding them (and certainly not a reason for violence or destruction of property) but it at least kept Trump and the media from being able to run with a story that everyone's thrilled about this.
