Not saying ignore them, it's just that those recording and songwriting techniques aren't the actual basis of the (stupid) genre name, that's all.  If you are gonna use the term, you're sort of stuck with its meaning, IMO.

To me they are the alpha and omega and somewhat mirrors/poles of a certain style that is one of my favorites (if desert island discs were still a thing, they are both on there).

I am not disagreeing with any of this (and the musical info is hugely helpful to people like me who have no real musical knowledge) but just want to make the semantic point that the term 'shoegaze' (which is itself a deeply silly term, but whatevs) refers to stage presence/performance aspects, not musical or recording…

I wouldn't necessarily say Sugar is *better* than Husker, but Sugar is definitely better *recorded*, and thus more pleasant to listen to.  God I wish there was some way to fix the Husker recordings, so they weren't so thin-sounding.
