Speaking as a Mormon, it's always been my impression that writing speculative, far-futuristic sci-fi is a difficult conceptual load for some LDS writers because a lot of Mormons are pretty certain they already know what's coming. I think Orson Scott Card addressed this well in his short story collection FOLK OF THE

Nostalgia factor
Loved the post, but I'd just like to say that I think it's a bit too easy to jump on the nostalgia bandwagon with respect to the digital/green screen revolution that's swept over the Hollywood blockbuster this past decade and a half. When it comes down to it, heart is what the creators of the film put

I second the shout out for TRUTH. Fantastic album with Beck cranking out some of the craziest guitar sounds I've ever heard. It's like he was trying to murder his instrument or something. It should get mentioned along with LED ZEPPELIN I more often. Rod Stewart's vocals are fantastic on the album as well.

You need to go see this movie. Right when the closing credits roll, it busts into a Speed Racer rap.

Suspension of DISbelief
One minor correction, a movie that gets you to buy into its premise is getting you to suspend your DISbelief, not your belief.

Well I'm sure you'll have a lot more to write about when you get to the monumental pairing of Paul Rodgers and Queen. I'm sure that one's in your iPod already.

Oh great, so you can read minds now too?

Free
Ah Noel, you got me all excited when you said last week that you had gotten pretty heavily into FREE, so I was bit disappointed that all we got was a write-up of their best-known song. There was a lot going on with this band and the 2-disc MOLTEN GOLD anthology is probably the best way to get acquainted with

They call me Hip-hop-apotamus
My lyrics are bottomless….

What? No Vegas?
I thought it was a rule that all tours, no matter how small, must go through Vegas.

Oh man, that HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME show was fantastic. It had that hilariously over-the-top British host who acted like every band was the second coming of Jesus. Oh, and I remember Vanilla Ice being on it and completely changing the words of whatever song he was covering.

No man, no need to make excuses; THE MATRIX is an excellent action movie. I'm not really sure why the backlash is so harsh on that one. Great visual design, great action set pieces and fantastic special effects combined with solid plotting. Love it.

Great column!
My friends and I had this exact conversation recently: BACK TO THE FUTURE gets funnier and funnier the further we get from 1985 because now those scenes in the "present" are as perfectly frozen in a specific time as the scenes in 1955.

DARK CITY is definitely a great film and I think it stands on its own even if one is a fan of THE MATRIX (as I am.)

Suggestions…
Scott, I know you must have a huge list of suggestions by this point in your endeavor, but let me put in a plug for one that I've seen mentioned several times: DARK CITY, and one that I haven't seen mentioned at all: BERRY GORDY'S THE LAST DRAGON.

So bad it's good
This is my favorite bad movie. Endlessly quotable, supremely cheesy and with one of the all-time greatest death scenes in cinematic history, this definitely makes the so bad it's good list.

I can't believe you mentioned CLOVERFIELD!!!

Yeah, my intro was actually the Dark Horse comic book series that started a few years ago. I realized that Conan was a much more rounded character than I had been led to believe.

Just started reading Howard
There are some great collections out right now of all the Conan stories. I bought the first volume and was blown away by how good they are. I'd love to read some of his non-Conan stuff.

The funny thing is, I saw this movie when it originally played at Sundance and one of my most vivid memories is of a scene playing to INXS' "Never Tear Us Apart." When I finally saw the movie on DVD over a year later, that song was no longer in the movie. So it was restored on the Director's Cut? That's interesting.
