Doing a Google search seems to show that a lot more alternative bands have used theremin than '60's bands. (The first song that comes to my mind is the Pixies' "Velouria".)

Please, no more commentaries from McCartney. His tracks on both Magical Mystery Tour and 1+ confirm he is the type of commentator who describes what's going on onscreen and little else. (Of course, lots of artists do this, but the only person I've ever heard do this more exclusively than Paul is William Friedkin.)
I agree; removing the strings was wonderful. If there is one Beatle song that I would automatically skip past when it came on, it would be "The Long and Winding Road". When the LIB…N version came out, and those first big orchestral hits weren't there, it was a rediscovery of the song.
