Nah. But I like to think he's a Community fan and when he saw this episode he wept at the sudden rush of terrible memories.

The joke wasn't in Whedon's script. It was one of the many silly things From The Mind Of Jean-Pierre Jeunet that are  completely out of place in the Alien canon but that Jeunet sounds very proud of in the audio commentary.

Yeah, I really think trying to force a comparison with an existing show is unnecessary unless you really want someone who's not interested to watch it. And even then, if you tell someone "Watch this! It's the new Arrested Development!" or "It's the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer!" it's bound to just end in
