The iota of recantment is appreciated. I agree it was hokily written, and could have used a little more finess. However, the immediacy of opening up is not so strange given the stregnth of their relationship at that point in the film. not as nonsensensical as one might think
As someone else said earlier, showing therapy in a movie can be problematic because a) much of therapy occurs after the climactic scene, and b) insight is usually acheived a little at a time, over long periods.
