I read an interview once with Hollander in which he said that previously he had just done whatever work fell into his lap and he didn't really try and that this was the first thing he became passionately involve in and put in his own effort.

Would like to know from any Americans whether NbC felt the need to censor Eric Idle singing "life's aa piece of shit"

I love how Phil was almost an amalgamation of all the other villains: Junior's sense of superiority, Richie's ambition, Ralphie's sociopathy and Johnny Sac's intelligence

The thing is that although there are obviously good and bad sitcoms and dramas in Britain and America, a lot of the best sitcoms come from Britain and a lot of the best dramas come from America.

This is why you read before you post - I just made a similar point but no where near as well thought through and insightful. Great post

I actually think that this I the big difference between how Sorkin and Whedon write. Whilst both of them write quippy, clever stylised dialogue, all of Sorkin's characters sound the same, whereas Whedon's characters have their own distinct voices.

On the "character relationships" theme: I really like the way that the relationship between Jayne and Book develops and their friendship really helps to make the audience feel for Jayne and like the character.

For me, it's more that everyone is clever and witty in the same way. This is the difference I see between the likes of Aaron Sorkin (everyone sounds the same) and the likes of Joss Whedon (although the characters are witty and clever, everyone sounds different).

Rev for me is an indicator of how the best British comedies can do quiet, not laugh a minute, comedy in a way that American comedies can't match. Twenty Twelve is another current British show which I feel succeeds in the same way.
