yeah, being a fan of QOTSA but not a huge fan of hard rock/metal/etc, I much prefer Homme's sweet croon to Nick's screaming.  To me, he sounds like the singer in every shitty high school metal band.  Employ him for his bass work, if at all.

I think he's using his choices as A) windows to personal storytelling and B) shout-outs to people he knows and admires, neither of which is a bad thing for a guy who is an excellent storyteller and seemingly a genuinely kind person.

judging by this review, watching the movie, with its confusing casting and jumpy structure, sounds like it's more exhausting than reading the book, and that should never be the case.
