Barney Fife.  I wouldn't lay money life or limb on that, but I watched an episode this morning (Up In Barney's Room) and Don Knotts really was a very skilled actor.

What Stingo said.  I had no problem watching through, several times, and maybe will again someday.  It's just that there are moments certain characters seem to go above and beyond in the effort to make themselves annoying.  But it does wrap up well.
