The worst episodes are the ones that are all plot, like that one about Billy's origin story from last season. So much plot crammed into 30 minutes that there was no time for jokes or character development (well, I guess it was technically character development, but in the least emotionally effective way possible).

That sounds like the exact same experience I had after seeing them open for Broken Social Scene. I left the concert thinking "wow, gotta look those guys up!", and then started playing their album and couldn't believe the bullshit that was streaming into my ears. That concert was still pretty fun, though…
