I've watched Babylon 5 start to finish 2 or 3 times since I got all the dvd season sets, but I also watched the show when it was first broadcast, missing episodes here and there as I moved to college, home from college, and the show changed broadcast stations a few times during its run.

I wouldn't say DS9 was better. I enjoyed the serialization and extended story arcs better in Babylon 5 then DS9, but I think DS9 did single stand alone episodes better.
