I definitely saw this - I'm counting it as one of the times I saw the sketch in a non-Flying Circus place - but the Pythons were in their 50s and the sketch was at around midnight. Maybe they were actually just tired.  Plus they probably spent their Saturday listening to Lorne Michaels theorizing about comedy.

It's strange to me that whenever "Dead Parrot" has been performed at other times - and I think I've seen/heard it performed 3 other places - Cleese ratchets his character to full rage complete with shouting, etc.  I guess that's because he's performing it live for a large audience that knows the bit and he can't get

It turns out that Alf actually came from Melmac as a way to recover from addiction to Rembuar, Melmac's most dangerous narcotic, but here on Earth he developed a horrible, unquenchable desire for cats - an animal whose pain he can feel with fifty times the sensitivity of human empathy.  His wisecracks are a cheap

I'm sorry, but it's not 'Internet' - it's that Louis CK's success has come in a totally different form. Chappelle cannot outrun Chappelle's Show - the name of the show is his name, and unless his career turns around to a large degree, it's what his obituary will lead off with.  From the anecdotes being related here

What he's basically saying there with the contract line seems to be:  'I wouldn't have to do this bullshit if I had just delivered on that contract', which is to me much sadder. It's one thing to have regrets, yet another to hear an entertainer cop to regretting being in the same place as you.

When did Louis CK have to deal with massive success in the way that Chappelle did?  Even now, he's a critics' darling, and yes, he's one of the biggest stand-up comics in the country, but it's not like Louie is even one quarter of the hit that Chappelle's Show was.  He's a star in the same way that Breaking Bad is the

One thing I find fatuous is the comparison to Louis CK - CK must get recognized on the street much more now, but he doesn't play characters, and he doesn't have that many quotable lines ('Suck a bag of dicks'?).  Do people really go around quoting Louis CK's best bits?  It's not that type of comedy.  But Chappelle

I can't imagine a shittier reason to produce art than 'The people who are not my family that benefit from my work might be in trouble'.  I mean, I'd probably be bitter if I worked on the show, but Chappelle got paid all of that money because he was immensely talented, huge numbers of people wanted to see what he was

Lecturing people without a joke in hand is not.

I think the title of the article is poor - it should be titled 'I saw Dave Chappelle live in Chicago the other night' - but everyone is a part of Dave Chappelle's fame; that's what fame is.  If no one's a part of it, it doesn't exist.  People don't have the right to make career moves for him, but people can say 'Well,

Manos is like the Satantango of MST3K - part of enjoying it is being able to say you sat through the whole damn thing.
