I'm biased, but I've never understood how Lucille or G.O.B. are any less likeable/relatable than Sue Sylvester or Charlie Sheen's character on 2.5 Men, both of whom were on mega-hits.  (Albeit temporarily.)  Michael and his son were entirely human and if people needed that to latch on to, voila.

I remember thinking it was an affectation when she was first making it big; the whole 'crazy people are more artistic so I'm gonna act weird' thing.  Since she's still doing it 15 years later as an established artist, I think we can safely assume that she is, in fact, a bit nuts.
