Late reply here, but I think that with this theory you can ignore the autopilot thing entirely by saying that, even though it was fixed, Bruce wanted out and chose to go on manual so that he could put a permanent end to the whole batman thing, because he knew he never could escape from it. That's weird, because I was thinking of the last 30 seconds or son of 'Message of Love' because the guitar riff is just so wonderful, especially when paired with Hynde's 'oooooooooo' vocal part and her breathy delivery of 'talk to me, baby'.
