It wasn't floundering, but the introduction of his character created an even bigger dynamic and was a turning point for the series. I think it wouldn't have been the same without him.
The Vergers were definitely a chance for the show to get even more grubby than it already was…I was just as thrilled when the attention moved away from them as much as I was when they popped up here and there, particularly in the recent final season.
Cool. Shelton - along with Bujalski and the Duplass Brothers - is one of the better filmmakers who came out of the whole 'mumblecore' thing. I'm sure she'll do well with this!
