The Noodle Incident

This is one of the things that's interesting to me about what I would call the "conservative mindset." Conservatives believe that liberals have all the same politically incorrect feelings and opinions that conservatives do, but they pretend they don't, making them hypocrites.

I'm sure you're well-intentioned, but I think your point of view here is part of the problem, or at least evidence of the problem. There is no appropriate language for discussing misogyny and rape culture. People (all people) don't take criticism well, but especially those in privileged positions. This is why it's so

Isn't this essentially all you have to add to the conversation? You're asking for "less extremist" language (although, calling the language "extremist" rather than "extreme" suggests there's something militant about the discussion) and for consideration of your emotions. How does this do anything to lessen misogyny or

You're insisting that you have some place in a discussion about misogyny and preventing sexual assault, but all you have to add is that your feelings are hurt. The reason women are harassed and assaulted is because men think that women should put their needs and feelings ahead of their own. Women are expected not to

If you want to do something you could start with not calling people who talk about rape "self-righteous." That's a lot to ask, I know.

Women are talking about their safety and you're worried about your psyche. This is what all the bandying of the word privilege is about. Your problems are small compared to those of others, but you inflate them so that they seem to you to be equivalent. We all suffer emotional pain, but you're making yourself out to

And George Will thinks rape comes with benefits. Anyone can be an ignorant asshole.

The problem is that women's experience of harassment and violence from men is not a rarity. One out of five women has been raped. Does that qualify as a rarity? If you just include harassment and intimidation you'd be looking at a much higher percentage. I don't know how old you are but if you have multiple female

This is exactly my point about comprehension. A woman saying that for her own safety she has to assume that all men may be dangerous is not the same as saying that all men are dangerous. In fact, the point is that because some men are dangerous the only way for a woman to protect herself is to operate with the

Ugh. Here's the thing. The conversation on the women's side is only all-inclusive of women. No one has been accusing all men of anything. To say that it has shows either poor comprehension or a serious narcissistic need to try and make a conversation that isn't about you about you.

It's two different conversations. Women are trying to talk about their experiences, while a few men want to talk about themselves. At the very least it's changing the subject.

If a man's reaction is to get defensive and say "not me" it means he both isn't really listening and doesn't take the problems women face seriously. It's putting his own need to feel good about himself above the need of women to express their experiences as women.

Shhhhh… you'll never get Christians to compromise if you use that word.

Atheists and Evangelical Christians should reach a compromise. Like maybe they can agree that there is a God, but he loves gays and hell was closed because it was too mean.

And then there's his point that all Krugman critics make of his partisanship. Gee, this noted economist has a consistent and coherent point of view that lines up very closely with the political philosophy that one of America's two political parties mostly/sometimes adheres to. This is just more centrism

The US is anti-intellectual to the extent that even potential public intellectuals disdain the idea of the "public intellectual." Perhaps it's our self-centeredness, but as a culture we constantly reject anyone stepping out of his or her supposed area of expertise as pretentious, which is why someone like Jon Stewart

Nobody likes libertarians.

What?!! ElDan, this is the most reasonable thing you've ever said on the internet.

A thoughtful article gets called pretentious by a long time commenter and Pepsi Jr. has two likes. Maybe it's time for the AV Club to fold up shop.

You've obviously never seen any rape statistics.
