I suppose that's fair, but I enjoy The Pack enough to say watch it anyway. And Flutie's death is really the first striking one of the series, a lot of season 1 having weird tonal dissonance with murders every week that aren't taken seriously.

Season 5 (my favorite) is definitely better than 3 and 4, and at least on par with 2, don't go into it with the assumption it'll be bad. I have no idea where that reputation came from. 6 and 7 are considerably more flawed, and 7 especially pisses me off a lot, but there's plenty worth watching between the two…

The final season is easily its best or second best.

You can't skip the latter two because both have plot-important stuff, Jenny Calendar is introduced and Flutie dies. Also I love The Pack, think it's much better than Never Kill, but that's purely subjective.

Angel is ultimately supplementary to Buffy, both in terms of respective heights reached (while Angel is still definitely a great show) and in that Angel strongly benefits from having seen Buffy first, either entirely prior or concurrently.
