I think you're thinking of Jawarhalal (sp?), the Indian guy.  Arvid was a straight-up white-guy nerd.  (But not as big a nerd as his counterpart on the Soviet team, who wore *two* pocket protectors.  I can't believe I remember that line from 25 years ago.)
