    I'll counter that fans are much, much more sensitive to player safety than they were in the past.  Nowadays, most fans can barely watch any of the old (I'm talking 2003 era) "Jacked Up!" segments that ESPN used to play, where we celebrated dudes knocking each other out with ridiculous and dangerous hits to the head.
