I'd say pick up a copy of "Tales of the Demon". Since it's all written by O'Neil if feels like it's one long story. Great intro to Ra' Al Ghul. If you like the character, pick up the recently published trade "Birth of the Demon". It has three stand-alone Ra's stories in it. Two of them are great and one is ok.

Yep, him and Green Lantern (DC's other huge selling book). It doesn't make any damn sense to me either. Especially the fact that he's only been operating for five years and has a ten year old son.

Oh, no argument there. He seems like the worst kind of person imaginable. But I still think "ASB&R" was fun, because it was obviously, OBVIOUSLY a joke. Unfortunately, fanboys don't really have their sense of humor tuned very well.

I can't really explain it to you, because the reasons you just described are why I think he's one of the best.

There are definitely ways to acquire these comics online if you don't mind reading through a computer.

I am so, SO happy someone else mentioned this great, great hardcover collections. They're fun and inventive and evidence that Batman is great beyond the "big four" books everyone mentions (DKR, Year One, Long Halloween and Killing Joke). It irks me that no one mentions Batman stories going further back than

He *tries* to make it fit in the epilogue, but it's far from anything I would call "logical".

Thanks for the recommendation! I skipped the non-Dini stuff during his run, but I'll have to track this one down. Do you have issue numbers?

There's a great Grant/Breyfogle Penguin story in the old trade paperback "The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told Volume Two" anthology spotlighting Catwoman and Penguin (it came out for BATMAN RETURNS). This trade actually has a lot of fun one issue stories featuring Penguin, and you can get it really, really cheap

And a miniseries entitled "The Return of Bruce Wayne" which deals with him jumping through time back to the present after everyone thought he died in "R.I.P".
