This was the most recent example, but it's a pretty common phenomenon. Once you enter your "peanut butter and banana sandwich/shooting televisions" phase, your expenses start to outpace your income and you're just a drain on the future estate. If Chappelle thought his people were trying to expedite the process to

I don't think that's what I said. The crew got a steady paycheck, and were therefore (reasonably) devastated by the loss. The performers, however, largely came out ahead. HotPants never identified which "people associated" he or she was referring to; I was just pointing out that not everyone was equally hurt (or hurt

It's a pretty common conspiracy theory that, once you've achieved a certain amount of success, it's more profitable to have you spectacularly flame out (preferably die) and capitalize on the back catalog than to double down on future projects. If you assume that every artist will eventually peak, you want to avoid

While I'm sure the crew was devastated, I think many overestimate how much people were making on that show. Comedy Central was never a big check-writer, and it sounds as though Chappelle left right before the big "contract renegotiation" stage of his career.

Lest we forget, Louis cast the same actress who played is date in one episode as his mother in the next episode. It's not "bad planning," it's that he literally does not care about continuity until he needs it for a particular purpose. His mother's identity has shifted dramatically—from caring but overwhelmed to

No idea why I thought I was the first one to think of this. Just read the older thread.

The problem(?) with this project is that the homoerotic overtones are just too overpowering to get away from, especially with today's ironic, knowing narrative style. The whole concept's too over the top to accomplish with a straight face. Basically, they should just give in and make it like that "Brady Bunch" movie

That makes more sense. It seemed odd that a young actor would have three successes and then say, "Welp, I'm done trying out for stuff! If you want me, you know where to find me!"

Like Ernie Hudson, I always thought that Lou Diamond Phillips deserved a more successful career than he ended up with, though (like Ernie), he's consistently in projects that have some visibility. The "offer-only" stage of his career, though, suggests a bit of hubris when compared to the self-confessed luck and

A band of competent musicians on a major music label, fronted by a conventionally handsome singer with a decent voice, performing well-structured pop songs filled with easy emotion and big hooks.
