I felt Cumberbatch was pretty much misused in Star Trek, much as he has been in all his major film rolls post-Sherlock.
Andy in Season 3 was pretty interesting, and Ed Helms pulled it off. But yeah, after that they just floundered, and I think the pressure to use Ed Helms, an actor they basically lucked into by signing him just before his efforts outside the show gave him a high profile, couldn't have helped.
It's possible that he just knew the Stanford market really well, but his skills didn't transfer.
The bit with Michael pretending to take instructions from his second head seemed hugely out of character. It felt like he'd got Jim's lines by mistake.

I'd always imagined the "You quit" line Rorshach delivers as he walks away down Nite Owl's escape tunnel delivered in a deadpan. Having Rorshach yell it, instead… well, it pretty much sums up what was wrong with the movie.
