It's not a "depressing outlook." It's obfuscation. You're both downplaying this variety of terrorism as the same time as you say "nobody downplays this type of terrorism."
They could just have put it down to a woge gestalt, it's not like woge's aren't 100% supernatural already anyway. The whole "inbred" thing would still have been compatible, too, just in a spirit sense.
Wikipedia has it as being The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which I find a little bit confounding. It does list the adaptation where the 'Mouse King' has three heads, which is a total Rat King thing, but oh well!
