I think it's a go-to litmus test for lazy critics. I agree that Beef has better albums but Trout has some goddamned arresting moments.
That said, the last record I put on was Shiny Beast and before that was Mirror Man.
It wouldn't top my list either…

Fuck YES! Quite likely my favorite thing they ever did (any incarnation.) When it breaks into that coda (after "be reborn"…) with the bass doing octaves and French just Krautrocking the double-time, it's musical nirvana. One of the few truly transformative pieces of music in my life.
