Newspeak wasn't especially subtle or clever. The population of Oceania had been so isolated and traumatized by war, it eagerly adopted the obvious manipulation. That's what's so horrifying about the novel, and why it's so relevant today.

Alps is outstanding. Picture Michael Haneke's dispassionate rigor with a generous helping of impish gallows humor.

"Fire Walk With Me" seems to support this view as well. For example, during the queasy murder scene in the train car, a crazed Leland tells Laura "I always thought you knew it was me!" while clutching the missing pages of her secret diary.

"Forget it, Jake. It's Mogadishutown."
