I read an article (slate maybe) about how it's an allegory for the political left and right and their dysfunctional yet symbiotic relationship. Obviously, the Dude represents the hippy/leftist establishment ("the bums lost") and Walter represents the hardline right. Neither of them know what the fuck they're doing

That is perhaps the most insightful comment I've read about either punk rock or Palahniuk. Both have similar themese that resonate at a particular, formative age. The themes have less impact the older you get, but that doesn't lessen the nostalgia of discovering them for the first time. Kudos.

I'll go ahead and throw in that I've always have loved Gambit, but realize after Jeruselum's comment that I was in fact introduced to him in the cartoon first. I still think he's a great secondary character.
