Improvements in gameplay, except for all those many,  many times in ME3 when I accidentally end up doing commando rolls out of cover and get shot to bits. (To be fair though, that's a small price to pay for just how dynamic s/he is in that game).

I haven't played the first Mass Effect game yet (only recently came out on PS3) and I jumped straight in at 2.

The true ending, if not the chronological one, is The Citadel DLC. Which is the greatest DLC I have ever played (and that includes Fallout New Vegas' Old World Blues).
