Re: Vegas. Yes! I was there for a few days a couple of years ago and hated it. I came away really angrily left wing, though in part that was also due to the insane levels of homelessness when we were in San Francisco beforehand.

Iain M. Banks' Culture novels go a little way into exploring that. There's a theme about what do you do when all your reasonable material desires, and quite a few unreasonable ones, are met and machines do most of your thinking for you.

For some reason this reminds me of one of my favourite scenes in SG1. For some reason or other they have to help deliver a baby and they all turn to Carter to take the lead. Carter's reaction is this utter "how the fuck would I know what to do?" expression.
