I think it's the same reason women wear sparkly leotards and a buttload of makeup. the men are judged purely on their tumbling abilities, whereas the women's floor routine is more aestheticized.

Basically, a lot of it actually has to do with personality. A good cox is self-assured and confident without being a tyrant.

Coxswains also have to steer the boat, which is a huge responsibility. Having a bad one is really unpleasant. They are not exactly coaches, they are more like boat captains: during a race they'll issue all the orders and tell the rowers when to increase or decrease speed or pressure, or if the set of the boat is off.…
