I think the writers know that, but they also know how flustered and awkward people get on the stand. And it's Alicia's job to exploit that flusteredness and awkwardness.

I've always felt that there should be parent-child privilege. Especially for parents. Parents should not be forced to testify against their children; it just seems wrong somehow. Also, I would bet there's a much higher rate of parents perjuring themselves to protect their children than of spouses perjuring themselves…
